Course Description

This training is an online self-paced course. CHWs will receive a total of 8 DSHS certified CEUs after completing the course. ​

This project is funded by the Department of State Health Services through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is managed by Texas A&M University School of Public Health CCHA's National Community Health Worker Training Center.

The purpose of this project is to deliver more effective and comprehensive cancer education on survivorship to CHWs.

Learner Outcomes

  • CHWs will be able to define what cancer is in their own words.
  • CHWs will be able to describe the process of how cancer develops and spreads in their own words.
  • CHWs will be able to distinguish at least 4 common types of cancer and their forms of treatment.
  • CHWs will be able to define what a cancer survivor is and how the patient's routines and functions change and transform.
  • CHWs will be able to identify the categories of side effects a cancer survivor goes through and how to promote healthy behaviors. 
  • CHWs will be able to describe the main characteristics of life after treatment and the cancer survivorship guidelines address several topics in the survivor’s life. 
  • CHWs will be able to describe the 3 stages of cancer survivorship. 
  • CHWs will be able to identify and be able to explain the different challenges that may occur during each of the stages of cancer survivorship. 
  • CHWs will be able to actively use the list of support services available to patients during and after cancer treatment available in the communities they serve.  
  • CHWs will be able to analyze the importance of relying on scientific information, verified and accepted by health professionals as well as debunking myths about clinical trials. 
  • CHWs will be able to identify the different types of cancer treatments standardized by the medical team of professionals. 
  • CHWs will identify and explain the types of professionals involved during the process of treating and surviving a cancer patient. 
  • CHWs will identify other members in their communities who can be supportive during the cancer treatment and survivorship processes for different types of patients. 
  • CHWs will identify at least 3 strategies to use in the process of empowering the clients they work with in the community. 
  • CHWs will define in his/her own words what health literacy is and its importance in educating people in the community.
  • CHWs will integrate motivational interviewing as part of the tools needed to support clients in their efforts to share support resources for patients at different stages of cancer survivorship.
  • CHWs will recognize the psychosocial needs of cancer survivors, their families and caregivers. 
  • CHWs will identify and implement strategies, tools and resources to address the psych emotional needs of cancer survivors, their families and caregivers. 
  • CHWs will describe how the emotional and mental health of cancer survivors, their families and caregivers is impacted during the different stages of survivorship. 
  • CHWs will identify the positive impacts of healthy eating on cancer survivor patients who are in different stages of survivorship.
  • CHWs will select and use strategies, tools, and resources available in their communities to help cancer survivors through healthy eating. 
  • CHWs will describe the importance of how a team of health care professionals can support cancer survivors at different stages of survivorship.
  • CHWs will describe the relationship between cancer and physical activity based on scientific evidence. 
  • CHWs will develop a list of different physical activities that they can recommend to different types of cancer survivors at any stage of survival. 
  • CHWs will identify at least 3 common side effects during the survivorship stages. 
  • CHWs will explain the benefits of using integrative therapies during and after cancer treatments and the different stages of survivorship. 
  • CHWs will identify and describe the different types of integrative therapies. 
  • CHWs will distinguish which type of integrative therapy is recommended for the most common side effects of cancer treatments and their impact on survival. 
  • CHWs will define what palliative and hospice care are and their differences. 
  • CHWs will distinguish various coping methods that can be used by cancer survivors.  
  • CHWs will describe at least 4 social determinants of health that impact the life of a cancer survivor. 
  • CHWs will explain 3-4 resources for referring cancer survivors in their communities. 
  • CHWs will identify when a patient in the community is experiencing financial distress; access to care; chronic illnesses or disabilities; and food insecurity. 
  • CHWs will identify what cancer disparities are.
  • CHWs will define what health disparities are and identify ways in which these affect a person living with cancer.  
  • CHWs will understand the importance of culturally competent communication.  
  • CHWs will define what a caregiver is and their roles and responsibilities. 
  • CHWs will identify when a caregiver is undergoing compassion fatigue. 
  • CHWs will identify when a caregiver is experiencing burnout and ways to prevent it. 
  • CHWs will Define resilience and its importance. 
  • CHWs will recognize ways to build resilience.  
  • CHWs will identify ways to cope with stress and emotions.

This course is an 8-hour, self-paced, DSHS-Certified CEU for Community Health Workers (CHWs).

This course is free of charge. Upon completion of all course materials, your certificate will be automatically-generated and accessible to you on Modern Campus​.
