Course Description

Breeder and Hatchery Management builds upon basic poultry husbandry practices and focuses the lens on birds raised for the purpose of producing fertile eggs to supply flocks used for meat production. You will learn about the importance of lighting and diet management on hen health and reproduction, and different techniques for raising males and females. Turkey and broiler breeders will be also be compared. Finally, you will follow the process of reproduction from egg formation to incubation and assessment of chick quality.

Learner Outcomes

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe best practices to manage broiler breeders during brooding, rearing, and production.
  • Suggest recommendations for growth corrections in feed restriction management.
  • Discuss hatchery management and methods of embryo staging and chick quality assessment to judge incubation success.
