Course Description

In this comprehensive course, students will learn how to evaluate different asset classes to achieve client investment objectives. They will also examine quantitative investment concepts, investment theories and strategies, and asset pricing models. Through this comprehensive approach, students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to build successful investment portfolios tailored to individual and family needs, and to create effective investment programs for individual investors.

Learner Outcomes

  1. Describe the operations of the securities markets and the basic principles of investing and portfolio planning.
  2. Understand the equity and fixed-income asset categories and their risks and roles in the portfolio.
  3. Explain the use of mutual funds and ETFs in the portfolio and the guidelines for asset allocation and managing your own portfolio.
  4. Identify and evaluate the roles of alternative investments, such as commodities and real estate, in the portfolio.

Prerequisites

Recommended: Completion of FPCC 435 Financial Planning Fundamentals with a 'C' or better.

This course can be taken concurrently with any course in the certification program.

A working knowledge of introductory finance and basic accounting principles is strongly recommended for success in this course. Students should be comfortable with concepts such as the Time Value of Money, financial statements, and foundational accounting terminology. If you need to strengthen your understanding in these areas, free online resources such as Khan Academy and YouTube can be helpful for review and self-study.
